The evolving landscape of software engineering demands proficiency in a set of industry-standard tools. This project seeks to address critical gaps in practical software engineering skills by covering areas such as Unix-like command-line environments, scripting, version control, and core CS skills (Web, cybersecurity, and network programming) that are not commonly taught in traditional university engineering programs but are indispensable for success in the industry.
Learning Outcomes:
- Navigate and operate within a Linux environment proficiently.
- Execute various Unix commands effectively.
- Understand the basics of Bash scripting for task automation.
- Gain familiarity with version control using Git.
- Acquire fundamental knowledge of web development.
- Understand networking fundamentals.
- Obtain an overview of essential cybersecurity concepts.
Description of Participation: The course includes three sessions, each covers a specific area. Following each session, participants will be required to complete an assignment related to the content covered. Upon fulfilling the course requirements, participants will receive a department-level event completion acknowledgment. Additionally, after your participation in this study, you will be invited to complete a post-questionnaire. This survey will take approximately 5 to 10 minutes to finish. Completion of the survey is optional and not a mandatory requirement for course completion or receipt of acknowledgment.
Voluntary Participation and Withdrawal: Your participation in this course involves the collection of data for research purposes. This includes: the engagement rate for each session, completion of assignments, and responses provided in the post-course survey. These data will be used solely for educational and research purposes.
Your participation is voluntary, and you can withdraw at any time without explanation. You may decline to answer any question. If you have concerns about your participation, please contact the TRU REB Chair at TRU-REB@tru.ca or 250-828-5000.
The result of this study will be published in this web page in Fall 2024.
